Crossfit Day 1 - WTF were we thinking?
June 10, 2017, Fen and I started our Crossfit journey. It all started a few months ago after chatting with my former friend, Chad Bell. You see, it was then that I found out he and his gorgeous wife, Rebecca, own Crossfit La Mesa. I knew crossfit was all the rage, but honestly I thought it was only for elite athletes not old and fat 50 year olds. One thing led to another and Fen and I showed up at their gym at 10:00 in the morning on a Sunday. YES, I said Sunday!!
As we drove to the gym we both questioned what the hell we were thinking. We are far from athletes and how in the world could we keep up? Chad assured me there were all sorts of people into crossfit we would be fine. Once we got there he introduced us the Deborah, a 60 year old woman who also decided she needed a change several months earlier. I immediately felt a connection to Deborah. She was positive and optimistic assuring us we could do it. She said, yes it's hard, but if she could do it, we could. This morning was different than my previous experiences at "typical" gym. Over the years I had belonged to various gym I felt awkward and felt like I didn't belong. Most of the time people would glance at me, but rarely did anyone offer to help, encourage or attempt to motivate. This day at Crossfit La Mesa it was was very different. When we walked in not only did people look at us, they smiled too. Everyone was wonderful. Although, we were strangers everyone was warm and encouraging. It was special and I have never experienced anything like that before.
Crossfit "people" talk weird and we quickly realized what we knew as workouts before, not so applicable now. As we walked to the workout boards we saw crazy acronyms like WOD, thrusters, plyos....WTF did that mean???
Chad and crew were awesome! They walked us through everything and demonstrated the proper movements. Deborah showed us the warm up of the day. Again, the nomenclature was crazy. We did toy soldiers, scorpions and more. All in all we survived, but we both thought we would die, yet we joined. Are we crazy, were we brainwashed, drinking the kool-aid, experiencing a voodoo mind trick or were we just two people who had faith in our friend? We can determine the answer to that question at a later date!
